That would be a safe alternative to cash. I would still use the same safety procedures you use for keeping cash safe, IE dont leave the cards in open view, etc etc etc.
The one thing you will have to keep up with is the currency conversions, as they will change by the hour, if not day, and your money may not be withdrawn at the same rates each time....

Depends on where you are coming from and where you are going to.
If you are from the States and are going to be in a major city, you can simply use your ATM card.

It the best way to travel without carrying a wad of cash and safer, too. Keep the card in a separate place from your wallet while out shopping though. Like in your front pocket. You would be surprised how deft pickpockets can be.
